Why the Cheapest Atlas Copco Air Motor Quote Costs the Most

An emergency-replacement specialist explains why total cost of ownership matters more than unit price when buying Atlas Copco air motors, including the Atlas Copco AB-A SHS model.

If you're replacing an Atlas Copco air motor, I'd tell you this before anything else: stop looking at the unit price. That sounds backwards, I know. In my role coordinating emergency replacements for process plants, I've watched too many 'cheap' purchases turn into expensive ones. The lowest quote on an Atlas Copco AB-A SHS is often the priciest way to keep your line running.

Take the email we got last week. Subject line: 'how many legs does a have?' It came through the maintenance portal from a manager named Harmon Groves. No model number. No photo. I knew he was asking about the Atlas Copco AB-A SHS sitting on his bench because we'd quoted one two days earlier. A nameplate photo cleared it up in ten minutes.

Honestly, that email is the perfect introduction to total cost thinking. Real procurement decisions happen under pressure, with incomplete information, and on a deadline. If you optimize for sticker price instead of total cost, you miss the part that actually breaks.

I'm Done Defending the Cheapest Quote

Conventional wisdom says get three quotes and pick the lowest. That works for commodities. An air motor is not a commodity, and an emergency replacement is not a routine purchase.

In March 2024, a client called at 4 p.m. on a Thursday. They needed a replacement air motor for a drum lifter. Normal lead time from the distributor was three days, but the line was scheduled to restart Friday evening. Missing that window meant a $50,000 penalty clause. Two options sat on the table: a rebuilt generic motor from a surplus place two states away, or the Atlas Copco AB-A SHS with overnight freight. The generic was $620. The Atlas Copco was $980. I recommended the $980.

The generic motor arrived at 9 a.m. Friday. It had the wrong inlet orientation. The adapter we needed didn't exist in the supplier's catalog, so we paid $220 for a custom one and $180 to a local fabricator to modify the bracket. The line restarted at 7 p.m., right on the edge. Then the generic motor failed nine weeks later. That $620 purchase ended up costing $620 plus $220 plus $180 plus another shutdown, and nobody wanted to calculate that number.

When I compared the two paths side by side, I finally understood the argument. The buyer wasn't comparing motors; they were comparing risk, time, and support. Those are costs, even if they don't appear on the invoice.

The Rebuild Trap

What most people don't realize is that 'just rebuild it' advice has a hidden assumption. It assumes a shop with the right drawings, the right clearances, and the right torque specifications. That's harder to find than it used to be. The rebuild thinking comes from an era when every town had a motor shop. Today, many rebuilders are doing little more than changing seals and calling it a remanufactured unit.

I'm not saying every rebuilt motor is bad. I've specified rebuilt units when the original was obsolete and the customer had no other option. But before choosing one, ask the rebuilder these questions:

  • What shaft runout tolerance did they hold?
  • Do they have the original Atlas Copco drawings for the AB-A SHS?
  • What happens if the rebuilt unit fails during installation?

If the answers are vague, that's a red flag. And if the quote is 40% below every OEM alternative, ask which of those questions you didn't ask.

Per the Atlas Copco product documentation we reviewed in January 2025, the AB-A SHS has specified standard mounting dimensions and port orientations. That doesn't mean every unit installed in the field matches those drawings. A photo of the nameplate is still worth more than a complete model number typed from memory.

Energy and Duty Cycle Are Part of the Price

Air motors run on compressed air. If a motor is worn, rebuilt with poor clearances, or simply not the right model for the duty cycle, it will use more air to deliver the same torque. That extra air is paid for every hour the motor runs. The energy cost can easily exceed the difference between the cheapest and most expensive quote.

In one audit we did, a generic replacement on a mixer used noticeably more air than the original motor. The yearly cost of that wasted air covered most of the price of a new OEM motor. That's the kind of number that doesn't show up in a purchase order.

This is where total cost thinking matters. The purchase price is one line. The compressed air cost is another. Downtime is another. Freight, rush fees, adapter plates, and service visits are all separate lines. Add them up and the 'cheap' motor becomes the expensive one.

But Aren't You Just Protecting OEM Margins?

That's a fair question. I'm not an Atlas Copco salesperson. I'm the person you call when a machine is down and the wrong part was delivered. I've specified third-party parts when they made sense. I've seen situations where the generic option was the no-brainer. But those were deliberate decisions, not default rules.

The problem is that many purchasing systems default to 'lowest price wins' without asking what else is included in that price. In my role coordinating rush replacements, I don't have the luxury of 'usually works.' Last quarter alone, we processed 47 rush orders with 95% on-time delivery. That percentage exists because we stopped treating quotes as line items and started treating them as complete proposals.

If you have a reliable rebuild source, a low-duty application, and time to test the unit, a cheaper replacement can make sense. I'm not pretending every situation requires a new OEM motor. But don't make that call until you've calculated the total cost. Do that first, then argue with the quote.

The Bottom Line

When you're choosing an Atlas Copco air motor—whether it's the Atlas Copco AB-A SHS or another model—the unit price is the beginning of the analysis, not the answer. The total cost includes the price, the time spent confirming the model, the risk of a bad fit, the energy consumed over the motor's life, and the cost of the next shutdown if it fails.
