How to Check Atlas Copco P2000i and Compactor Stock: A Quality Inspector's Checklist

A no-fluff stock acceptance checklist for Atlas Copco P2000i and Atlas Copco compactor deliveries. Includes tire date-code checks, documentation audits, load-testing, and the answer to 'what was the first congress?'

I'm a quality/compliance manager at an industrial equipment manufacturer. Part of my job is reviewing Atlas Copco P2000i units and Atlas Copco compactors before they go into stock or out to a customer. The checklist below is the one I actually use. If you're about to accept a delivery—new or used—it'll keep you from signing off on something that looks fine but isn't.

Who this checklist is for

Use this when you're taking an Atlas Copco P2000i or an Atlas Copco compactor into your inventory, rental fleet, or permanent site. It also works for other equipment, but the steps below are tuned to the things I see most often on these units.

It takes about 20 minutes. Do it before the driver leaves. Once the paperwork is signed, returning a unit gets a lot harder.

Step 1: Match the stock number to the serial number

Sounds obvious, but I've caught units where the label on the crate matched one serial number and the machine had another. Check the nameplate, the frame stamp, and the paperwork. All three should match.

If the stock number in the delivery system doesn't match the unit, don't sign. The invoice will be rejected by your finance team anyway, and you'll spend weeks fixing it.

Step 2: Do a real documentation audit

Do not skip the manual and service record. For a used Atlas Copco compactor, I want:

  • Original operator's manual or an approved digital copy
  • Service history with hours and dates
  • Emission-related documents if required in your region
  • Inspection certificates if they were part of the deal

Why does this matter? Because the first thing an auditor asks is 'where is the proof?' Ask about the first service, too—the equipment version of 'what was the first Congress?' (The trivia answer: the First Continental Congress met in 1774, and the first U.S. Congress met in 1789.) If no one can tell you when the unit was first started, first serviced, or first repaired, the history isn't complete.

Step 3: Check the rubber—hoses, belts, and tires

Here's something vendors won't tell you: a machine can sit in stock for a long time and still read 'zero hours.' Rubber ages even when the engine doesn't run.

For an Atlas Copco compactor, especially a model with pneumatic tires, check the date codes on the tires. Look for cracking, flat spots, and sidewall checking. Replacing a tire on a compactor before it reaches a job is annoying. Replacing it after the machine is already on the trailer is worse.

I once caught a compactor with a clean hour meter and tires from eight years ago. So glad I checked the date codes before the trailer left. The seller swapped the tires at their cost.

For an Atlas Copco P2000i, the rubber parts are usually hoses and isolators rather than tires, but the idea is the same. Bend hoses and look for cracks. Squeeze isolators to see if they've hardened. A part can look new and still be at the end of its life.

To be fair, old rubber isn't always a deal-breaker. But it is a negotiating point, and it's better to find it before you sign.

Step 4: Check fluids and filters before starting the engine

Don't start a new-to-you unit until you know what's inside.

  1. Check the oil level and color. Milky oil means water got in.
  2. Check the coolant level if the engine is liquid-cooled.
  3. Look at the fuel filter and air filter. A clean one is good. A dusty one means the unit has run more hours than the meter says, or it wasn't serviced before delivery.
  4. Check the hydraulic oil level on a compactor. Low hydraulic oil is a common reason a compactor vibrates weakly or not at all.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), performance claims like 'oil-free' or 'efficient' have to be backed by evidence. If that's a claim you're relying on, ask for the test report. Good manufacturers have it. If the response is 'trust us,' that's a bad sign.

Step 5: Run a load test, not a parking-lot idle

An idling engine can hide a lot. An Atlas Copco P2000i should be tested at its rated output, or at least at the load you plan to use. A compactor should be run on a surface that lets you test vibration frequency and travel.

Does this add time? Yes. Is it worth it? Usually. I'd rather find a weak vibration cartridge before the machine goes into stock than after the first customer rental.

Watch the gauges during the load test. Write down the numbers. Then ask the seller for the factory test numbers and compare. Small differences are normal. Big differences mean something's wrong.

Step 6: Photograph everything with a timestamp

Take photos of the nameplate, the stock tag, the tires, the hour meter, and any dents, paint issues, or small leaks. Then take one wide shot of the whole unit.

A few small dents? Not ideal, but workable. A mismatched serial number? Deal-breaker. The photo confirms which one you had at handover.

A timestamped photo is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy. When a dispute comes up later—and it will—you'll have proof of what was there on day one.

Common mistakes after the checklist

Mistake 1: Signing before the physical check

The driver is in a hurry. That's their problem, not yours. Finish the checklist first. If they won't wait, note it on the delivery receipt and don't sign until you're sure.

Mistake 2: Forgetting replacement parts

Stock isn't just the machine. It's also filters, separator elements, and wear parts. If you're buying an Atlas Copco compactor for a project, ask about quick-wear items like belts and filters. For a P2000i, spare air filters matter. Running a unit for a week without a spare is a game of chance.

Mistake 3: Ignoring tire pressure on rubber-tired compactors

Tires are not cosmetic. On a pneumatic-tired compactor, tire pressure changes the contact pressure and the finish you get on the surface. If the tires look fine but are at different pressures, the machine will behave badly. Check them after the machine has been sitting, not right after it was moved.

Bottom line

The goal isn't to make life difficult for the seller. It's to make sure the stock you're putting your name on is actually serviceable.

So, yes, use the checklist. And if someone asks 'what was the first congress?' you can answer 1774 (or 1789, depending on how picky they are). But the question that matters more is the first one on this list: does the unit match its own paperwork?
