Here's who this is for: you're the person responsible for buying industrial equipment—a compressor, a vacuum pump, a pneumatic tool package—but you're not a full-time equipment engineer. You're a plant manager, an operations lead, or, like me, an office administrator who got handed purchasing because "you're organized."
I manage procurement for a 160-person manufacturing site. Roughly $450,000 a year flows through my desk for MRO, tooling, and capital equipment. - Electricity draw based on your actual load profile, not the datasheet curve
- Service kit intervals and consumable costs
- Air quality and filtration requirements, including oil-free options if your process demands it
- Expected unscheduled downtime and what an hour of lost production costs your facility
Atlas Copco's oil-free screw compressors carry a higher upfront price than some alternatives. That's not news. But people hear "premium" and assume it's pure margin. Actually, brands that can justify premium pricing charge more because the lifetime cost is lower—the causation runs in that direction. To be fair, if your plant runs the compressor only 300 hours a year, the energy savings won't move the needle enough to justify the premium. Ask three questions, and get written answers:
- Are you authorized to sell and service oil-free rotary screw compressors specifically, or only a subset of the Atlas Copco line?
- How long have you been an authorized Atlas Copco partner?
- What is your documented response-time SLA for a breakdown call?
"They've always been good" is not an answer. A checklist has names, dates, and references you can call. If the distributor hesitates on any of these, that hesitation is data.
Mistakes I still see buyers make
Three mistakes show up repeatedly.
First, skipping the financial check because "it's a huge company." Even huge companies have difficult years, and product groups get restructured, sold, or discontinued. You're not starting a purchase; you're starting a relationship with the distributor, the service team, and the parts pipeline. The small order from Step 4 is the real first move.
These processes sound heavy upfront. But compared with the cost of making the wrong decision on a $60,000 compressor, three weeks of research is cheap. One last note: confirm current pricing, specifications, and distributor coverage before you order anything—technical details and local service agreements change more often than you'd expect.
